I'm now back in Sunny London after an amazing year in Australia.
I have just finished my book "Live Life on the Edge" and that will be available soon.
It's good to be back in London and I have Workshops planned for September, based in Leister Square.
I will also be working with Dance Choreographer Maire Clerkin launching a new workshop called "BODY PERCUSSION"
This is guaranteed to be lots of FUN combining Rhythm and Movement.
The website will also be getting a lick of paint. I would like to thank Laurent Picquet for his hard work this year on the site. He has also had GREAT feedback from people visiting the site.
Mark Brown originally from Dublin will be running my courses in my absence in Sydney. Mark's playing is second to none and he is now an instructor on behalf of Bodhranworld.com.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Wilks -- Friday, September 13 2002, 07:56 am Yo Kevin! How much to you oay people to give such glowing reviews? Or do you drug them?
Just kidding!!!! Everyone at the classical guitar society greatly enjoyed the demo - even with me joining in on boron.
Anybody who's "listening" in don't let Kevin's funny looks put you off, he's quite a bodhran player and a fair teacher to boot. You should have seen Kev after a day in the Aussie sun combined with bleached hair - looked a bit like a lobster with white sauce or Blackpool rock craked open.
Anyway, thanks for the lessons and I'll email you soon.

Thanks to all who came to support The Oracle Of
We play again this Thursday 3rd of October in The Harp Bar in Tempe from 8pm onwards. Come and let the Oracle Of Entertain you.
By the way The Oracle Of's Percussion was made possible by Kevin Kelly. He taught me this instrument and I could not have asked for a better teacher. Imagine, he actually taught me to Rock the Bodhran!
Go to see him in London and learn from the Master! (think of a combination of Yoda and Eddie Irvine).
If you are in Sydney get in touch with me. I want to share this buzz of the bodhran with all and sundry!
Yeah baby!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Browne -- Sunday, November 3 2002, 10:11 am Greetings fellow percussionists and welcome visitors.
Last night in the Harbour View Hotel in Sydney, The Oracle Of had a very exeburant and welcome reception to their set.
Many thanks to those that turned out to see us. The acoustics were lousy but people still liked what they heard. Even Brendan (the bass player)and myself singing!
Mr Kelly's exclusive new tippers made their debut in Sydney on the night. The Lava Lamp was well received as was the Bamboozla and the French Ticlker. The Keating too got a blast. Awesome !The Quality and excitement of these sticks have to be seen and heard to be believed. I had people who don't even play wanting to know where they can get them. They love the pouch too!
I fully endorse these sticks not that they need it!
Well done to Kevin Kelly and Simon Keating.
I hope you will join us on Sunday the 17th at the Harp Irish Pub,
900 Princess Hwy,
Tempe.
And should you be keen for some craic and learning to play too give us a call.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Kelly -- Wednesday, January 15 2003, 01:25 pm Greetings from Kevin
I would like to start of by saying CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Browne in Sunny Sydney on their new recording a true success story in the making. If you haven't checked out Mark's playing copy this site www.mp3.com.au/TheOracleOf/ and check it out.
To tell you the truth I have had my head down recently and have been concentrating on finishing my book. (Live Life on the Edge) Being back in London is GREAT I know I know the weather is not exactly like Sydney but you can't have everything.
At the same time as long as I have a drum in my hand I'm a happy man.
A warm welcome to everyone that has joined us in 2003. I think we will have a cracker of a year with lots of drumming in store on both sides of the world.
Keep the photographs coming in of drumming in interesting locations. I looking forward to seeing a few more!
Drop myself or Mark e-mail and again Happy 2003

I am a certified PADI Own Water Scuba Dive Instructor. I just finished the exam 3 hours ago and I am so stoked! I am exhausted but it's awesome feeling.
Anyway looking forward now to some good bodhran workshops and perhaps I might convince you to take up another fabulous hobby while I am at it.
Take it handy. I am off to Darling Harbour for some well earned RnR. It's sunny and hot, just right for a cold one.
Ciao drummers, keep on drumming,

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Browne -- Thursday, February 27 2003, 07:15 am Hello there!
For those of you in Sydney seeking me out I must apologise for my abscence. But if you want to blame someone, then blame Kevin Kelly. It's all his fault. If he had not taught me to play the Bodhran so well I would not be so busy.
The Oracle Of (my band or rather the band I am in) is on the cusp of a wave. We are in the Studio putting the finishing touches on our EP the Thirteenth hour.
The official launch of the CD takes place on the 24th of April 2003, in The Cat and Fiddle, 456 Darling Street, Balmain (Sydney).
For more details check out our web site on www.theoracleof.com.
We also have local media coverage and a possible slot on Chaos TV in the pipeline. Being in a band and playing the bodhran is amazing.
However a bodhran workshop is coming. The need is there and I am eager to get back to teaching that which lifted me into music and the stage.
Watch this space for details.
I hope all of you are well and drumming the goatskin as the chance arises. I hear if people go without playing the bodhran for too long the dress as vampires and phone people overseas. Be afraid, be very afraid!

It sounds like I'm missing a treat. Is there anywhere in Brisbane AU where I can learn?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Niall -- Thursday, May 8 2003, 05:03 am Hey Mark
Am living in canberra and want to enhance my (un)skills - are there workshops down here or will I have to travel to Sydney - not a problem if it's the weekend. When are workshops run?/?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Browne -- Monday, May 26 2003, 03:56 am Hello Lulu and Niall,
At the moment there are workshops only in Sydney.
However if there were enough people interested I could make arragments to host workshoops in these areas.
In the mean time I am putting a workshop together. All going well it will happen on the 14th of June. The Venue will be announced closer to the date. If you can make it to Sydney then, let me know. Also let me know if you have drums or if you want to get some. I can facilitate you.
Apologies to all for the long delay in my updates but I have been a busy bunny with The Oracle Of.
We have had flying start with the launch of our EP, The Thirteenth Hour.
It's been mad and awesome and we have been ever creative with new material.
The Oracle Of will be playing on the 8th of June in the Cat and fiddle, Balmain (Sydney). Come along for a great session of jazz and folk rock. Gust acts include Sundial.
Keep in touch and remember I do individual lessons to facillitate you shy types.
keeep it real and Happy drumming.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Donal Flynn -- Wednesday, June 11 2003, 03:08 pm So basically you learned to play Bodhran at the age of 18 or so and somehow consider yourself adequately experienced to teach others to play. Are there not enough bad bodhran players around already??
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Browne -- Friday, June 13 2003, 02:44 am (Hey Donal, you obviously never heard Kevin play. He ranks among the best in the world mate).
G'day Bodhrán fans!
As usual busy as ever. "The Oracle Of" are playing the Sandringham hotel on the Evening of Saturday the 14th. The Sandringham Hotel is located in Newtown in Sydney.
This weekend sees Sydney celebrating Bloomsday with a festival beginning on the 13th of june through to the 16th.
Bloomsday celebrates the great literary work, Ulysees, by the Irish writer James Joyce.
This festival is celbrated around the world and centres on the Adventures of Leopold Bloom in Dublin on the day of the 16th of June, 1904.
(Personally I found the book to be a mad read).
As part of that celebration I will be taking part in a session with other musicians in PJ O'Briens,
57 King Street, Sydney CBD.
PJ O'Briens Pub will become a Joycean venue, where Joyce's quintessential Dublin characters and Leopold Bloom will be at the bar portrayed by 5 actors and a poetic parody of ancient Ireland accompanied by live music.
Sounds artsy fartsy but it will be good craic.
Look forward to seeing you.
Mark Browne

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Kelly -- Monday, June 16 2003, 06:12 pm Thanks for the compliment Mark
With regards to the comment by Donal Flynn I felt that there were not enough standards out there Donal and this is why I devised 100 exercises. I started playing when I was 18 however I feel it is never to late for anyone to start playing.
I agree with you that there are low standards at the moment and this is why the Bodhrán in the wrong hands can sound like artillery fire.
This is what has motivated me to set up BodhránWorld
This is what BodhránWorld is all about!
Raising the profile of the instrument
Setting standards
And getting everyone playing no matter what colour, race or creed. (and Age)
Regards
Kevin Kelly

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul D -- Tuesday, July 29 2003, 04:04 pm Hi Kevin
I hope you are well! a bit of bodhran update....
I practiced last week end with a friend who plays the violin,
And this week end in front of 50 people spontaneously joined a celtic
violinist and a guitar player (top Sheffield folk musicians) at a friend's
birthday party in the Pennines.
I felt a bit nervous for the first tune and my hand felt a bit weak because
of that, but afterwards got into it.
The guitarist afterwards said I had a "good groove" and the violinist said
"you have the knack"
So I thought you'd be proud of that - it's given me a bit of the taste for
it!
Thanks for your teachings - so far - I will be back!
Best from Paul

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Browne -- Tuesday, August 12 2003, 04:46 am Greetings Bodhran enthusiasts, from Sunny Sydney. Well as those of you in Sydney know I am now running workshops in the Sydney area and having great success. My students are being smart by getting lessons in the winter months so they are ready for the long hot summer of sessions and good craic.
The Oracle Of are having a bit of a hiatus in August but will be dazlling you with acoustic angst in September at a Sydney venue near you.
However for those of you who still have not bought the bands debut EP "The Thirteenth Hour", it is now available in the Irish Shop in the Rocks in Sydney.
These select few CD's are signed copies so get in quick for a piece of History and excellent music, even if I do say so myself.
As for me I am headed back to the Emerald Isle for a while. Three weeks actually, catching up with friends and family and a wedding (not my own of course).
keep on tipping the auld Goatskin and drop me a line if you are keen for lessons and plenty of fun. oh yeah and watch this space, big things are brewing in bodhranworld.com!
P.S. Be on the lookout for the first Australasian Fleadh Ceol, coming to Western Australia from the 26th of september to the 5th of October. The craic will be mighty!(for those of you who do not know what a Fleadh Ceol is, it is a music festival and an excuse to party.)
All the best,
Mark,

You could get a Bodhrán in any music shop in Co Antrim that sells percussion instruments.
Try a few out and see how thay feel
Decide on a budget Say around £40 this will ensure you get a quality mid range drum
Good luck and drop me a line if you would like some lesson as I'm living in the Port..
Take care

Thanks for dropping in and how are you?
The best advice I can give you is to play both of them....pay particular attention to their weight and how you feel when you are playing....I get asked to advise on the best drums and tend to sit on the fence for obvious reasons....what I will say is to try out a few makes and believe me, the one that you are destined for, with be going home with you.....
Hope this helps
Give me a call and I can discuss it firther with you if you need any help
Kind Regards

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian Mason -- Monday, April 5 2004, 07:36 pm "After recently taking part in a bodhran world workshop, I decided to take my new found drumming ability to Scotland where it was quickly put to good use playing with local trad musicians. In a matter of weeks and regular practise I found that the more I played the greater my confidence became. This is due entirely to the clear, precise and most of all fun teaching method developed by Kevin Kelly.
It's also a great and different way to met people and enjoy a unique way to socialise and play to some great music. I can't recommend Kevin's teaching method highly enough. Bodhran world also offers a mine of information and means to book and pay for lessons." Brian Mason.

Brendan White's Mate are quality drums. The quality of these are built to last. Neither myself or other pro players have a pro Walton. I also don't know any professional players that play a Pro Walton. So Maybe it should just be called a Walton. I don't see where the pro comes from much more a chance to charge more for a factory made drum.
Other GREAT Drums "Roddy Turners" (If you are lucky to get your hands on one) also John MacKnowall (Australian)
Depends what you are after...
Good luck with you BW

Regarding Speed.
I teach the Speed exercise.....No pain no gain I'm afraid........
Start with a slow reel and gradually buil it up get faster and fast keep the quality
aslo do plenty of Upwards strokes........If these are weak it will distort you sound >>>>and sounds watery.
So Forget speed if you cant get the quality......
Play with some dance music as well that has a fast beat......
Keep the questions coming.....

Send me an e-mail Kevin@bodhranworld.com
I have a name for you and a session to check out.
Hold the Tipper just like a pencil.
Do this exercise three times a week.
You need to do 3 x 100 upwards strokes in your first week then do the same with downward. Practise this until you are completely confident the stick is not going to go flying again.
Remember to keep you head up and back straight
. None of this Slouching over the drum it looks bad and you can't communicate with other musicians
Dont Stare at the drum or the floor Look at the other musicians and their body language
Regarding Sharon Corr some may say that she has never done anything that would blow the audience away. "A very light Tippy style of playing with little percussive power or flavour" It could be said she stares at the floor and the drum and has a Slouchy posture.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim McVeigh -- Wednesday, June 23 2004, 08:58 pm I keep reading this nonsense about holding the stick like a pencil!!!
The bodhran is a drum. Look at how other drummers hold their sticks. Especially a good jazz drumer. They do NOT hold their sticks like pencils!! They hold them like drum sticks.
The stick must be held in the strongest part of your hand - where the index finger intersects with your thumb. Your fingers play NO part in holding the stick. This is crucial when you talk about tone. The tone of a player who holds a stick like a pencil is extremely "thin" and "weedy". It has no "bone" behind it.
Using the "pencil" method also encourages turning the wrist inwards. This is very bad for technique and will cause carpal (sp?) tunnel syndrome. If your arm hurts even remotely after playing - something bad is happening!!! Holding the stick between your thumb and index finger will make it more difficult to bend your wrist.
Your tone and the strength of your playing will be immeasurably better if you keep your wrist straight and work your forearm. Put a screwdrivre in your hand and pretend to drive a srew nail - this is the perfect technique for your stick hand.
I await the screaming!!!

Great to have your comments and I'll pass them on to KK.
It could be said there are some very watery players out there that use the tipper like baisting a turkey on thanks-giving. I would imagine they also play sitting on their behinds staring at the floor. It could be said that these players have no Umph about then and give the instrument a poor representation. Therefore a weak percussive beat. I think you have come across a few of these. This reflects their playing ability more that the technique used.
Completely disagee with you.......But answer these
1.Tell me about your triple techniques?
2. Tell me how you can put a Rim shot in a combined triplet.
3. Tell me about your posture?
4. Tell me how you play triplets on the wood then tranfer quickly to the Skin.
5 Regading the pain aspect. Through good posture and a good training this is greatly reduced. But yeah Dancers get sore feet!!!
6. I think you need to hear some good players that play with this technique
7. Great to have a Debate, Keep it coming
8.What are your drum rolls like?
You have got to hear Kevin Kelly play sometime!
Jason BW London
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim McVeigh -- Saturday, June 26 2004, 07:35 pm 1. I think there is way too much emphasis on triplets - especially for beginners. I have people coming to me for lessons who cannot identify (by ear) reels, jigs, slips, slides, polkas etc. - and they have been playing for years!!! And, of course, they first thing thay want to learn is a triplet!
The technique I teach concentrates on the foream (no fingers, straight wrist). Achieving the triplet is made by rotaing the forearm (at speed) the full 90 degrees. Its very easy.
2. The Rim Shot is an overused gimmick that should be banned!!! Along with the bones and the spoons. However ..... my technique does not get in the way of ruining the finish on your drum if you really want to.
3. Posture.......has got everything to do with your feet. Sole of feet should be firmly on the ground, spaced to the width of your shoulders. Lower back should be kept straight, shoulders completely relaxed and stick arm hanging straight down. Play on a proper seat with a back - do not play standing up or on a bar stool. People who put shoulder straps on their bodhrans should face jail!!
If you have learned to listen properly you don't need to look at anybody. Do you think eyesight would have made Ray Charles or Doc Watson better musicians?
4. As before, I do not play the frame of the drum. These are gimmicks not music.
5. As regards pain, I believe that you are very, very wrong. A dancer's career is over by 40 at the latest - a drummer (with the right technique) can play to old age. If you are experiencing discomfort or pain after playing your drum, there is something wrong with your technique. In my experience, turning the wrist inwards is the culprit.
6. I have heard all of the "rated" pencil holders and I'm sorry but it does not turm my crank!! As regards non-pencil holding players, check out; Kevin Rice (Baal Tinne, Chicago) and John Joe Kelly (no introductions necessary).
8. My drum rolls are to die for you cheeky thing!!
I teach the bodhran as a drum. As a boy I was taught the marching side drum and many of those techniques are applicable to the bodhran. I also encourage players to listen to other styles of drumming and study their technique. They all have one thing in common - mimum effort for maximum effect.!! Watch video of Buddy Rich or Alla Raga khan (Indian drummer). Drumming is physically rigorous and built om a sound technique.
Over to you Jason!!
Regards,
Jim McVeigh, USA

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason -- Monday, June 28 2004, 01:49 pm Hi Jim
Hope you are well!
Parts I agree and disagree with.
Whats wrong with standing up when performing! You see some drummers like to move around and entertain and opposed to sit on their behinds with the wollie jumpers and beard brigades. Give me a valid reason why you can't do both and look great at the same time on stage? (I'm talking about stages not smokey bars)
Great Drummers feed off Sound, Movement and visuals. Players that stare at the floor are boring to look at AND get a sore neck eventually,
and never go anywhere except to the bar when polkas are being played.
How do you smile at the audience when you are looking at your shoes or staring lovingly at your goat?
I agree with you that there are some very sloppy players that don't undersatnd the Basics never mind triplets. This "gets on my goat" excuse the Pun. Standards and etiquet need to be branded into some people. A global ban put on rubbish players.
Spones especially are a "Load of Rubbish" Don't get me started I AGREE I AGREE WITH YOU.
Bones when played properly which is Rare (Mel Mercier Professor Michael O'Sullivan's percussionist)are amazing.....That the only person I know that can play the rest should be banned with the firing squad being JMV and JB. Yes we agree on that. Now If I see another Eejit playing with a Hair brush it will go where the sun don't shine.
Side Playing when overused is deafening (I Agree)
but provides a great lift when used with effect. I have a drum that is operation and not one that sits on a wall. It has a few war wounds.
I'm enjoying our discussion.
Heres some questions?
What type of drum do you play?
I play a REMO, MOG, Belgarth, Roddy Turner (AMAZING and best maker in the world) (Stage) Seamus Kane, also Brendan White, John Mac Knowall (Kangaroo)
Tippers Roddy Turner, Kevin Kelly, Belgarts and my hand.........
Forgot to mention Who needs a stick?
JB
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim McVeigh -- Monday, June 28 2004, 08:00 pm I play two Albert Alfonso drums - 14" and 16". They have the most incredible bottom end and just keep getting better with age. For a Cuban guy living in Texas, he makes outstanding drums. I heard John Joe Kelly play a Seamus Kane drum last year at Milwaukee Irish Fest and it sounded great. I think the next time I am home I will have to pay him a vist!!
Roddy Turner I do not know. Does he have a web site?
I make my own sticks. 3/8" Oak Dowl, 8.5" length, ball at each end. If you send me your address I will mail one out to you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drummers Live Longer -- Friday, July 30 2004, 03:10 pm Research reviews indicate that drumming enhances recovery through inducing relaxation and enhancing theta-wave production and brain-wave synchronization. Drumming produces pleasurable experiences, enhanced awareness of preconscious dynamics, release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self. Drumming alleviates self-centeredness, isolation, and alienation, creating a sense of connectedness with self and others. Drumming provides a secular approach to accessing a higher power and applying spiritual perspectives.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drummers Live Healthier Lives -- Friday, July 30 2004, 03:13 pm Drumming to the rhythms of life. Friedman, Dorian, U.S. News & World Report; 06/09/97, Vol. 122 Issue 22, p17, 1/2p, 1c
Abstract: Considers how drumming is becoming an important therapeutic tool in the United States. Drumming as a scared ritual in many societies; The benefits of drumming and other forms of music therapy in helping Alzheimer's patients stay focused; The reduction of stress with drumming exercises; Speculation as to how music affects the brain in Alzheimer's patients.
DRUMMING TO THE RHYTHMS OF LIFE
Since our ancestors first struck sticks and rocks against the ground, drumming has been a sacred ritual in many societies. It is a big part of various New Age movements. And in corporate America, musical management consultants are leading drum workshops to build team spirit. (Apple, Motorola, and AT&T have reportedly tried it.)
Drumming is becoming an important therapeutic tool. In nursing homes, "drum circles" and other forms of music therapy help Alzheimer's patients focus, if only temporarily. Drumming exercises greatly reduce stress among Vietnam veterans and other victims of trauma, apparently by altering their brain-wave patterns. And listening to music with rhythmic cues improves motor coordination in stroke patients and in those with Parkinson's disease, helping them walk up to 50 percent faster. "Everything we do in life comes down to rhythm," says counselor Bob Bloom. "If something is off, we can reintroduce a correct rhythm to realign our physical and emotional state."
On a recent morning at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, D.C., a dozen elderly residents with dementia gathered for their weekly rhythm circle. Therapist Kathy Mollard had each member bang out numbers and shake maracas to the tune of Yankee Doodle. Some who seemed otherwise confused could nonetheless tap perfectly on cue. Alzheimer's researchers report similar results: patients unable to speak who can sing childhood melodies; those barely able to walk who can dance a waltz. As yet, neuroscience has no sure explanation, but some experts think the brain's receptors for music and rhythm are spared the early ravages of senility. And while no amount of drumming can cure the disease, music therapist Barry Bernstein notes, "It can improve the quality of life and offer another way for family members to communicate with their loved one."
